We held our inaugural meeting in July 2025 when we decided on our meeting dates for the future, a rota of book choices and most importantly the name of our group!
Originally, we met in the library, however we’ve now moved to meeting in the homes of members who volunteer to host.
I’m thrilled to say Books and Banter goes from strength to strength. Each member chooses a book in rotation. Group Leader, Jackie, orders them from the library, or people buy their own, whatever they prefer, and I think it’s fair to say we all enjoy the discussions about the books, often going off at tangent, but always having fun.
We’ve been going for just about a year now and have read the following, quite eclectic, selection of books with varying opinions on all, but mostly positive.
Here are two of our members deep in discussion about one of our recent reads, A Thousand Splendid Suns- a beautifully written but deeply moving novel set in Afghanistan from the 1960s through to the early 2000s.
Since the last Newsletter we have read: Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield The Bees by Laline Paull The Night in Question by Susan Fletcher Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Unbreakable by Richard Askwith Brotherless Night by VV Ganeshananthan.
I think it’s fair to say we’ve all enjoyed getting to know each other as well as reading and discussing the books. We’ve been very well supported by the library and some of us enjoyed an event they put on for local book groups to support World Book Night at the end of April.
Books and Banter led by Jackie Hammans, meets every 3rd Thursday in a member's home in the afternoon at 1.00 pm for 1.30 start. Occasionally they might change the date or time so it's advisable to check with the leader beforehand. They discusses a book chosen by one of the members. It is Active with no waiting list.
