Coal-mining is such an integral part of the history of our local area. There is still so much evidence of mine-working around, from miners cottages and old colliery buildings to place names and restored spoil tips ('batches') now covered with trees and vegetation. For several centuries, people's lives depended on the North Somerset Coalfield. The last mines (Kilmersdon and Writhlington) were closed to coal production in 1973.
